Hypnotherapy and Feeling Stuck

While there are external forces at play that influence our ability to move in the direction we wish to in life, it is possible to move forward. Often we must be willing to go outside of our everyday thinking, outside of our comfort zone, to have any movement beyond feeling stuck.

“There are no wrong turnings. Only paths we were not known we were meant to walk.” – Guy Gavriel Kay, Tiguana

Feeling “stuck” is a common human experience, often characterized by a sense of paralysis, lack of motivation, or the inability to move forward despite wanting to change. It usually stems from a conflict between the conscious desire for change and subconscious barriers like fear, limiting beliefs, or unresolved past experiences.

Hypnotherapy addresses this by bypassing the conscious “analysis paralysis” and working directly with the subconscious drivers of behavior. Here is how it helps:

1. Identifying and Shifting Limiting Beliefs

Often, the feeling of being stuck is maintained by deep-seated beliefs formed in childhood or through past failures (e.g., “I’m not good enough,” “It’s not safe to succeed,” “I always fail”). In a waking state, these beliefs feel like absolute truths. Hypnosis lowers the “critical factor” (the part of the mind that analyzes and rejects ideas), allowing the therapist to access these beliefs directly.

2. Uncovering Hidden Conflicts

Sometimes, staying stuck serves a hidden purpose, known as “secondary gain.” For example, staying in a dead-end job might provide security, or avoiding a relationship might protect someone from potential rejection. The conscious mind wants to move forward, but the subconscious protects the person from perceived danger (even if that danger is just discomfort). Hypnotherapy can bring these hidden conflicts to light in a safe environment. By acknowledging and addressing the real reason for the resistance (e.g., “I’m afraid of the responsibility that comes with success”), the subconscious can be reassigned to support the desired change rather than block it.

3. Breaking the “Analysis Paralysis” Loop

Feeling stuck often involves overthinking. The conscious mind spins in circles, weighing every possible outcome, which leads to inaction. Hypnosis shifts the brain from the high-frequency beta waves (active thinking, stress) to alpha and theta waves (relaxed, receptive, creative). In this state, the mind is less prone to catastrophic thinking and more open to intuitive solutions. It allows the client to “step back” from the problem and view it with clarity, often revealing a simple first step that was obscured by anxiety.

4. Visualization and Future Pacing

One of the powerful tools in hypnotherapy for overcoming stagnation is future pacing. This is where you are guided to vividly imagine yourself already having made the change. They feel the emotions of success, see the new environment, and rehearse the actions required to get there. The brain struggles to distinguish between a vividly imagined experience and a real one. By repeatedly “practicing” the new behavior in the mind, the brain builds the neural pathways required for that behavior, making the actual action feel more familiar and less daunting when the time comes.

5. Reprogramming the “Reward System”

When we are stuck, the brain often associates the idea of change with fear or pain, and the status quo with safety (even if the status quo is miserable). Hypnotherapy can reassociate the act of moving forward with feelings of excitement, safety, and reward. By linking the desired action to positive emotions (dopamine release), the brain becomes naturally motivated to pursue that path, reducing the reliance on sheer willpower.

6. Addressing Past Trauma or Failure

Sometimes “stuckness” is a freeze response to a past experience or trauma. The nervous system is literally stuck in a defensive state.

  • The Intervention: Similar to how it helps with grief or addiction, hypnotherapy can help process the emotional residue of past events. By revisiting the memory in a relaxed state and reframing the narrative (e.g., “That failure taught me what I needed to know”), the emotional charge is freed, allowing the person to move forward without the constriction of the past.

There are many other tools that can be utilized in the alchemy of moving the feeling of stagnancy in life. EFT, Bilateral Stimulation, Brainspotting, and somatic exercises are all available to work with how you process information and experience.

Important Note

Hypnotherapy is not magic; it doesn’t force you to change if you don’t want to. It shifts the internal barriers that prevent you from doing what you already know you need to do. It is most effective when combined with practical planning and action in the waking world.
